Kayak runs hackathon to recruit for Cambridge office

If you're a company which requires cutting-edge innovation and the brains behind such technology to remain ahead in an increasingly competitive industry, what is the best way to recruit employees for your dynamic new office? Well the obvious answer is to host a hackathon.

Kayak, the travel search company, opened its 42,000-square-foot technology headquarters in Cambridge earlier this year. There are already 90 people working out of it, but the office has space for up to 200 which Kayak wants to help fill with smart new employees via a (slightly Hunger Games-style) hackathon.

The hackathon will be held April 25th - 26th at Kayak's HQ located in Cambridge, Massachusetts next to the CambridgeSide Galleria. Travel data will be supplied by Kayak and Amadeus for use by developers, but the results do not have to be travel-specific.

Kayak has set four development challenge categories for the hackathon; Data, Design, Movement, and Innovation. The maximum team size is five people to avoid unfair advantages, but you can enter as an individual as long as you are over 18. The projects submitted for each of the four Challenges will be judged by a panel of judges based on design and engineering merits (50%) and overall creativity (50%).

It provides a great opportunity for non-Kayak employees to show-off their skills to the company and win a spot in their office alongside other talented individuals. Around 200 people are expected to attend the event and competing teams will also have the opportunity to win up to a total of $20,000 in cash and other prizes. One team will also have the chance to win office space at Kayak's new HQ for three months.
